Protesters trap Gillard and Abbott
About 200 protesters trapped Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Opposition Leader Tony Abbott in a Canberra restaurant before police arrived to clear a passage for the pair.
The protesters, from the nearby Aboriginal tent embassy, banged on the three glass sides of The Lobby restaurant chanting "shame" and "racist".
Ms Gillard and Mr Abbott had just spoken at a ceremony for the inaugural national emergency medals.
At least 50 police, including the riot squad, were called to the scene shortly after 2.30pm (AEDT).
The two leaders, protected by police and security officers, escaped out a side door after about 20 minutes.
The Prime Minister stumbled as she was rushed to an awaiting vehicle, lost a shoe in the chaos and was helped up by police who were confronted by the protesters.
There had been false reports that the Prime Minister had been tackled. Ms Gillard's office confirmed she slipped as she was leaving the building.
Protesters chased their car down the road, banging on its roof and bonnet. Police formed a cordon across the road to let the vehicle get away while eight indigenous women sat on the road facing them.
The embassy is celebrating a 40-year milestone with a three-day "Corroboree for Sovereignty" with thousands of indigenous Australians travelling to Canberra for the occasion.
Tensions boiled over on Thursday afternoon following comments Mr Abbott made in Sydney earlier in the day.
Mr Abbott said he understood why the tent embassy was set up "all those years ago".
"I think a lot has changed for the better since then," he told reporters.
"I think the indigenous people of Australia can be very proud of the respect in which they are held by every Australian.

Lynette White police corruption trial: DPP orders review of case collapse
A review of the collapse of the biggest police corruption trial in UK legal history has been ordered by Director of Public Prosecutions, Keir Starmer.
Eight police officers were cleared in December of perverting the course of justice in relation to the 1988 murder of Cardiff prostitute Lynette White.
A judge at Swansea Crown Court ruled that they could not get a fair trial.
Her Majesty's Crown Prosecution Service Inspectorate will review the case, at an estimated cost of up to £30m.
It had been alleged that the former South Wales Police officers had manufactured the case against five men after the murder at a flat in Cardiff's docklands - three of whom were jailed for life before being released on appeal.
The retired officers all pleaded not guilty to the charge and were cleared after the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) offered no evidence against the defendants, halting the trial.
It emerged that files relating to complaints by an original defendant had been destroyed - which would undermine the defence's confidence in the disclosure process.
The revelation came five months into the trial and ended a case which had cost up to an estimated £30m.

Alun Michael, MP for Cardiff South and Penarth, said the review "must leave no stone unturned".
"We need to know why things went wrong, why so much money was spent on the investigation and then it wasn't carried through," he said.
Mr Starmer said he had asked Her Majesty's Crown Prosecution Service Inspectorate (HMCPSI) to carry out a review of the management of the prosecution in the perjury trial.
"It is important that the public can have confidence in the way the CPS conducts its cases and the Inspectorate will examine the issues with the utmost thoroughness," he said.
"Inevitably this will take time but will be completed as soon as is practicable and a report prepared for the DPP.
"South Wales Police has decided to refer their part in this matter to the Independent Police Complaints Commission and we will work in tandem with the IPCC inquiry into what happened.
"Both organisations are committed to sharing all relevant information with each other and arrangements are being made to ensure there is meaningful liaison between the two inquiries."
Original investigation
Tony Paris, Yusef Abdullahi and Stephen Miller - who became known as the Cardiff Three - were wrongly jailed for life in 1990 for the murder of Miss White.
They were freed in 1992 after their convictions were quashed.
Jeffrey Gafoor Jeffrey Gafoor was eventually jailed for life in 2003 for the murder
The case was reopened in September 2000 when new evidence was brought to light. Advances in DNA led to the arrest of security guard Jeffrey Gafoor who in July 2003 was jailed for life for the murder.
In 2004 the IPCC began an inquiry to establish what went wrong with the original investigation into the murder.
A year later former police officers were arrested and questioned on suspicion of false imprisonment, conspiracy to pervert the course of justice and misconduct in public office.
Former officers Graham Mouncher, Thomas Page, Richard Powell, John Seaford, Michael Daniels, Peter Greenwood, Paul Jennings, Paul Stephen have now all been acquitted.
Civilians Violet Perriam and Ian Massey also denied two counts of perjury and were also cleared.

HOLLIE GREIG CASE: ROBERT GREEN FOUND GUILTY ISSUE OF FREEMASONS RAISED
Trial Day 6 – Robert found guilty
Robert was denied a second key defence witness today (Dame Elish Angiolini) by Sheriff Principal Bowen when he supported an objection to her citation by the Prosecution, on the grounds that she was IRRELEVANT TO THE CASE. He had already been denied the Procurator Fiscal Stephen McGowan as witness for the defence, despite unanimous support for his citation by all his legal representatives, past and present. Thus prospects of a successful defence were damaged from the beginning, yet another instance of bias by the Scottish justice system, in Robert’s view.
On taking the witness stand therefore Robert asked if he could make a statement on the record? but was refused by the Sheriff. His cross-examination then began and continued all morning, with the only other witness to be called today taking the stand in the last 10 minutes before the lunch-break.
Answering his Counsel’s questions with his customary eloquence and clarity, Robert stressed that his main object throughout the activity which had offended a few people in Scotland was to secure an investigation of Hollie’s allegations. He was able to quote from Dr Eva Harding’s letter in which Sylvia Major is named as an abuser and stated that this individual was sitting in the court.
Throughout Mr Lamb’s cross-examination Robert reiterated his belief that he was acting in the public interest in attempting to protect vulnerable citizens. He explained that he had tried every possible avenue prior to taking the action which had given rise to his being prosecuted, and that Anne Greig had also been directing her concerns through the normal legal channels since 2000. By the time of his arrest therefore, 10 years had passed during the whole of which time the authorities had obstructed every attempt to secure justice.
Robert also continued to stress that his efforts were designed to instigate an OPEN, INDEPENDENT INQUIRY into all aspects of Hollie’s case, including the abduction of Anne and the highly suspicious death of Robert Greig.
The Procurator Fiscal, Stephen McGowan then opened the Crown’s cross-examination of Robert. Robert immediately countered this by asking McGowan why he had passed a sheet of paper bearing the masonic symbol of the Square and Compass to Sheriff Patrick Davies on 30th April 2010? and asked what possible role the Freemasons could have had in the prosecution case. Unsurprisingly, the Sheriff blocked this question, which only served to underline how his refusal to allow McGowan to stand as a defence witness had helped to undermine Robert’s case.
McGowan continuously challenged Robert on his expertise on a wide range of technical subjects, including his knowledge of post-mortem examinations. Robert pointed out he was not a pathologist, nor had he ever claimed to be, but that his opinion on all these subjects was directed by the expert witness statements provided him by Anne Greig. Moreover, as the pathologist Dr Grieve had stated that he liked and trusted such people as the Majors, Sheriff Buchanan and Elish Angiolini, he could hardly be regarded as an impartial witness.
To be fair, McGowan did raise questions about a possible family relationship between individuals of the same surname not having been properly established. Robert conceded the possibility that there might be some grounds for doubt in this regard but stressed that what was at issue was what the individuals had been alleged to have done, rather than any family connections between them, real or otherwise, that might exist.
Further on in the discussion it became apparent that McGowan, when questioned by Robert, had little knowledge of the PCCS report to which the latter had referred. It also became clear that neither McGowan nor the Sheriff appeared to have any concept of the effect that Satanic Ritual Abuse has on those unfortunate enough to be forced into such a cult. Robert explained that for 14 years Hollie had suffered the most appalling ordeals in silence, due to having been terrorised by her father. Therefore, anyone with any knowledge of this issue would know that evidence provided even under oath could be unreliable. As things stand, the Scottish court system does not yet provide a facility for swearing oaths in the name of Lucifer, somewhat surprisingly.
The only other witness to be called by the defence was Steven Raeburn, Editor of the distinguished legal magazine The Firm. During a brief cross-examination by Defence and Prosecution, Mr Raeburn described clearly and authoritatively his attempts to engage individuals in the Crown Office in connection with issues relating to the FOI Commissioner, details of which have already been published. Whereupon Mr Lamb brought up the matter of the payment to Levy & McRae over Angiolini’s private legal actions. McGowan objected to Defence’s questions but was overruled by the Sheriff.
In the afternoon session both sides summed up and Mr Lamb skillfully had Robert acquitted of 3 of the 5 charges against him. However the Sheriff ruled that in his view Robert was guilty of Breach of the Peace and of breaking some of his bail conditions.
Sentencing has been deferred until Friday 17th February, until which time the bail conditions on Robert remain in force.

'There will be riots on streets of America': Billionaire Soros predicts class war in U.S. as euro triggers collapse of global economy

Greece moved closer to the possibility of a chaotic default after euro zone officials rejected a final offer from the country's private bondholders.
Mr Soros, known as the ‘the man who broke the Bank of England’ after he made $1billion when Britain's pound crashed in 1992, had more warnings.
‘The best-case scenario is a deflationary environment,’ he told Newsweek. ‘The worst-case scenario is a collapse of the financial system.’
The veteran financer added that ‘it’s very hard to know how you can be right’ after all the problems associated with the ‘boom years’ before now.

LONDON CHAOS IN ACTION TAKEN AGAINST FINANCIAL ATTACKS ON DISABLED
The direct action group UK Uncut has joined disability activists to plan civil disobedience against the welfare reform bill in London this weekend, which they say will bring chaos to the centre of the capital.
Saturday's action, billed as "hugely daring and disruptive", is a shift for UK Uncut from previous action against alleged corporate tax avoiders, such as occupying stores run by Vodafone and the Arcadia retail group. It is forming alliances with campaigners against specific spending cuts it views as being, in part, the direct consequence of reduced tax receipts.
As well as joining with Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC) for Saturday', UK Uncut has joined with Fuel Poverty Action, which is planning direct action against energy companies, councils and housing providers, beginning on Friday.
Saturday's action, labelled "a message from the invisible", remain secret; those taking part areasked to meet at Holborn tube station on Saturday morning to travel en masse to the location.
A member of DPAC who asked to be identified only as Andy said a "non-violent campaign of mass civil disobedience" would disrupt central London, reminiscent, he said, of protests by disability activists in the 1990s against government cuts and non-accessible public transport, in which people halted traffic in London's West End by chaining themselves to buses.
Such action was necessary, he said, because the goverment was not listening to disabled people over the welfare reform bill and planned cuts to the disability living allowance, which the charity Mencap believes could lead to 500,000 disabled people losing money.
"We're seen as an easy target," Andy said. "It began when they got rid of all those quangos, including groups which help disabled people get their views across.
"Up to now, the voices of disabled people haven't been heard in this debate. That's why we feel we have to create a space for our voices. We want to explain what is happening."
Separately, Fuel Poverty Action has joined UK Uncut to plan events from Friday to Monday against government buildings and the offices of energy companies in London, Leeds and Cambridge, with more promised.
While UK Uncut has existed for little more than a year, its campaigns have given attention on the tactics used by corporations to minimise their tax bills, and the effect this has on government revenue.
The group has targeted Vodafone, which denies claims it saved billions in a tax deal with revenue and customs managers. Lst year, the Commons public accounts committee said HM Revenue & Customs had made secretive "sweetheart" deals with Vodafone and others. UK Uncut has also targeted shops run by Sir Philip Green's Arcadia fashion retail empire. Green saved tax in 2005 when a £1.2bn dividend was paid to his wife, Tina, who lives in Monaco, rather than to himself.
In March last year, more than 150 UK Uncut supporters occupied part of Fortnum & Mason, in London's Piccadilly in London, a protest whichthat led to a controversial trial in which 10 people were eventually convicted of aggravated trespass.

Husband's £6m legal bill in divorce fight
A millionaire businessman who hid his wealth from his ex-wife has been left with a £6 million legal bill after losing a High Court battle.
The couple, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had a property empire worth £100 million before the credit crunch. Three years later the husband claimed in court that he had "only £87 in his pocket".
But his ex-wife's lawyers found that he was spending up to £15,000 a month on his credit card and more than £2,700 a month renting a flat. Today Mr Justice Bodey ordered the husband to pay another £3.7 million to his ex-wife, bringing her total divorce payout to over £15 million.
Commenting on the four-year battle, the judge said: "They [legal costs] are now agreed to be nearing £6 million. It's a depressing sum of money. The costs of this long-running saga between a once married couple could amply have paid the £3.7 million now in issue."
The judge said the divorce had revealed "an unusual degree of animosity and mistrust" between the couple. The court heard that before 2007 they had received an "indicative offer" to sell their business for £100 million.
When their marriage collapsed in 2008 their combined wealth came to about £31 million, which they originally agreed to split equally. But a deferred payment to the wife of £4.7 million became the sticking point.
In late 2010 the husband claimed he had zero income and was "on the verge of bankruptcy". The judge said the husband narrowly escaped being reported to the Director of Public Prosecutions for hiving off £16 million to Lichtenstein without telling his ex.
