Sacha Baron Cohen today plunged the Oscars into controversy when he branded organisers "Zionists".
The remark may have been a jest in the manner of speech of his next comedy creation, The Dictator.
But it added to the dilemma faced by Academy executives who fear the British star is trying to hijack the 84th Oscars to publicise his new film and have threatened to ban him.
The 40-year-old creator of Borat and Bruno was invited to Sunday night's ceremony partly because of his performance in Martin Scorsese's much-nominated Hugo.
But he has made clear he wants to wear the military uniform of his oddball creation, apparently modelled on Colonel Gaddafi of Libya and Saddam Hussein of Iraq.
And today, in a statement on a website dedicated to his new fictional creation, Baron Cohen warned the matter was not yet settled. "Admiral General Aladeen will deliver a formal response tomorrow morning to being banned from the Oscars by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Zionists," he said.
Hugo has the most nominations with 11 against 10 for The Artist but the silent movie is tipped by bookmakers William Hill to win best film. After last year's British triumph with The King's Speech, Colin Firth is returning to present an Oscar but the UK's hopes of another great year may be fading.
The Help's Viola Davis is now tipped for best actress, an honour long regarded as a shoo-in for Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. Gary Oldman, nominated for playing George Smiley in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, looks almost certain to lose to The Artist's Jean Dujardin.
Guests at the post-ceremony ball will be served a "3D Oscar" dessert topped by a chocolate Oscar in front of an edible billboard that gives a 3D effect when viewed with special glasses.

FORMER starlets have exposed the scale of child sex abuse in Hollywood amid a series of shock accusations.
Two leading actresses spoke out as Tinseltown reeled from claims that three showbiz figures preyed on aspiring young hopefuls.
And one warned: "There are dozens doing this. The casting couch still exists — and it doesn't only apply to people over 18."
Alison Arngrim, who played Nellie Oleson in 1970s TV hit Little House on The Prairie, blames Hollywood for abuse she endured from six to nine.

Both women now work to protect child actors from predators who groom them with parties and sleepovers — and encourage them to think abuse is normal behaviour.
Alison, 49, said casting agents and managers lured children and their parents with promises of fame.
And she slammed studio bosses for never checking anyone's status as a potential offender.
Alison, who told of her ordeal in her book Confessions of a Prairie Bitch, said:
"For a sexual predator showbiz is the biggest free candy store going.
"You have kids and their parents throwing themselves at you."
Mary, 50, who detailed the danger to child stars in her own book Lessons From The Mountain, told The Sun: "There are a lot of predators out there.
"There was a crew member who made me kiss him every day when I was 11 and a director who stuck his tongue down my throat the minute I turned 18. It was very creepy."
They spoke out after child talent manager Martin Weiss, 47, who provided kids for Disney shows, was accused of eight sex charges.
Last month Sesame Street composer Fernando Rivas, 59, appeared in court over child porn.
And casting agent Jason James Murphy, 35, was exposed as having been convicted of kidnapping and molesting an eight-year-old boy.
Former child actor Corey Feldman, 40, revealed earlier this year he was also abused, saying predators were "everywhere like vultures".
He is now preparing to speak to Los Angeles cops about bringing the culprits to justice decades later.

'Paedophilia is Hollywood's biggest problem,' explosive claim by former child star Corey Feldman
Actor Corey Feldman has sensationally claimed that his Lost Boys co-star Corey Haim was the victim of a paedophile who was also a Hollywood mogul.
The Lost Boys actor said he was 'literally surrounded' by paedophiles at the age of 14, but didn't realise 'until I was much older what they were and what they wanted.'
In a special report, 'Underage And Famous' for ABC's Nightline show, Feldman blamed former co-star Corey Haim's death at the age 38 on the abuse he suffered at the hands of a 'Hollywood mogul' he refused to name.
The 40-year-old former child star said that paedophiles were 'like vultures' in the entertainment industry and alleged that the 'casting couch' even applies to children.
The pair were two the Eighties biggest child stars, alongside River Phoenix, and in addition to The Lost Boys, Feldman starred in iconic eighties movies The Goonies, Stand By Me and The 'Burbs.
He told Nightline: 'The number one problem in Hollywood was, is and always will be paedophilia," he said.
'It's all done under the radar... But it's the big secret.'
'There was a circle of older men that surrounded themselves around this group of kids. And they they had power or connections to great power in the industry.
'I was surrounded by them when I was 14 and I didnt even know it. It was only when I was old enough to know what they were.
'They all had either their own power, or connections to great power in the entertainment industry.'
In 2008, the pair who confronted each other on their reality show, The Two Coreys. Haim said to Feldman: 'You let me get f***** around in my life, raped, when I was about 14 and a half.
'So I'm asking you, what did you do when you saw that s*** going down?'
To which Feldman responded: 'I was being molested at the same time... what did you do about it?'
The 40-year-old previously revealed in an interview with GQ that he was molested by his assistant as a child.
Feldman says he believes the trauma of the abuse affected Haim for the rest of his short life. He died last year aged 38.
He said: 'The person that knows who did it and knows who he is is watching right now I guarantee it.
'There's a lot of good people in this industry and there's a lot of really, really sick corrupt people in this industry.
'And there are people that have got away with it for so long that they think there above the law and that's got to stop.'
Feldman, who married wife Susie on a reality show in 2002, said that he would not put is son, Zen, seven in movies.
He is also one of very few stars who won't allow his child to be photographed on the red carpet.
Haim's mother was contacted for comment but told Nightline she refused to respond to anything Feldman had to say. She added she wished he would only talk about himself.
Feldman was not invited to the funeral of his former co-star.
While his career has not reached the stellar heights of his child actor years, he recently starred alongside 80's pop star Debbie Gibson as Kathy Beth Terry's parents, Katy Perry's alter-ego in her Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.) video.
Last year his rock group Feldman and Truth Movement released the Eco friendly album Titled "Technology Analogy".
