As people across the UK prepare to fill out their census forms, a legal requirement, startling revelations show that the census is in fact being carried out by Lockheed Martin, the massive US manufacturer of arms.
Lockheed Martin’s products, which include cluster bombs, makes them the world’s largest arms corporation. Lockheed Martin is also responsible for interrogation at Guantanamo bay, and collect data (spying and electronic profiling and surveillance) for the CIA.
The cost of the census is estimated at £482m- to the UK taxpayer- and Lockheed Martin, is being given £150m to run it. Even more disturbingly, as all American companies are subject to the Patriot Act, the US government is allowed to have access to all data held.
In short, this means the US government will hold access to all the detailed, personal data on any of us who complete their forms. And as it is legal requirement to fill the form, it would thus be illegal to not inform the US government of everything the form requests.
Protesters, however, are fighting back. People are being urged to boycott the census, saying they are willing to break the law and face a £1,000 fine and a criminal record by refusing to fill in the 32-page questionnaire. Resistance to the decennial census is growing as a coalition of anti-war groups, pacifists, religious organisations and digital activists begin raising public awareness about the role of Lockheed Martin.
The company, which makes Trident nuclear missiles, cluster bombs and F-16 fighter jets, won the £150m contract to run the census on behalf of the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
A spokesman for the Stop the War Coalition said: “We will certainly be calling for a boycott and telling people not co-operate with the warmongers.”
Many people are now preparing to send back the following letter alongside their unopened form.
